Redlands Waste Bin, Recycle Bin and Green Waste Bin

Redland residents are set to get new waste bins, with a third bin being available if we want it, for green waste.

These three bins will have revised coloured lids:

  • Red – for normal rubbish.
  • Yellow – for recyclables.
  • Green – for garden waste.

The council has recently sent out leaflets detailing the new bins, new prices, new options… (figures only shown for Mainland residents)

The NEW Green waste bin is an extra $50 per year.

The cost for the current two bins: 240L waste and 240L recycle, is $288 per year in our rates.

The option for the 240L waste, 240L recycle and 240L Green waste is shown at $338, ie an extra $50 above the normal $288.

There is also an option for a LARGER Recycle bin, for NO EXTRA cost.

The option for the 240L waste and 340L recycle is shown at $238, ie no difference to the existing $288 charge. Worth getting this, if your recycle bin gets full/overfull on a regular basis.

A Smaller Waste Bin is also on offer to save $76 per year.

If you do not fill your normal waste bin, a saving of $76 is available if you swap your 240L waste bin for a smaller 140L waste bin.

The option for the 140L waste and 240L recycle is shown at $212, ie $76 LESS than the normal $288.

However, I thought to myself: Reduce my 240L waste to a 140L, (save $76) increase my 240L recycle to a 340L (free), and I end up with:
140L waste and 340L recycle for a $76 saving ?

But the council leaflet shows this as: 140L waste and 340L recycle for $230, ie $58 LESS than the normal $288. $18 less saving than I thought… I must be doing something wrong ?

These are the options that I saw on the leaflet:

Waste Litres Recycle Litres Green Litres Annual Cost
    240 240 $288
    140 140 $183
    140 240 $212
    140 340 $230
    140 140 240 $233
    140 240 240 $262
    140 340 240 $280
    240 340 $288
    240 240 240 $338
    240 340 240 $338

Time to check the council website:

Waste Litres Recycle Litres Green Litres Annual Cost
    240 240 $288
    140 240 $212
    140 140 $183
    240 340 $288
    140 340 $230

Yes, it seems that something is odd.

Take two house examples:

A house with a 240L waste bin and a 240L recycle bin reduce their waste bin to 140L, and they now pay $212.00.  Then then upgrade their recycle bin from 240L to 340L which should be free.

= 140L waste bin and a 340L recycle bin for $212.00 per year

A house with a 240L waste bin and a 240L recycle bin upgrade their recycle bin from 240L to 340L which should be free, but then reduce their waste bin to 140L, and they now pay $230.00

= 140L waste bin and a 340L recycle bin for $230.00 per year

Same result, different price depending on which way you do it ?

Are you as confused as I am ?  Or have I just got something wrong ?
